From the organizers:

– Can Calligraphy be understood as “thư pháp” in Vietnamese?
– No, Calligraphy is Calligraphy. It is “beautiful writing” by nature.

Calligraphy is a relatively new art in Vietnam, and it is only in the 20th century – “the Renaissance of Calligraphy” – that this art of writing was re-studied, and started to evolve as an art. So what is the nature of calligraphy, where did it begin, and is it possible to pursue a career in Calligraphy?

At the discussion we will have Dao Huy Hoang – a well-known artist in the Calligraphy community in Vietnam. With 6 years of professional experience in researching and practicing Calligraphy, Dao Huy Hoang will discuss the history of Calligraphy, its meaning and application in art and in life. He will also tell us about the modern professional Calligraphers: what are they doing, are they the artist or the artisan, or both?

Coming to the event, you will have the chance to discuss and see with your own eyes the calligraphic works by Dao Huy Hoang, which show different techniques and types of calligraphy.
