From Goethe Institut:
“The Tin Drum” is one of most important works of German post-war literature for which novelist Günter Grass was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The book will be presented by literature critic Pham Xuan Nguyen and translator Nguyen Tri Dung at Goethe Institut.
“The Tin Drum” is a modern fable that revolves around the life of Oscar, who was only 94cm tall, in the shape of a six-year-old child, but had a wise mind of an adult. In Oscar’s eyes, a multicolored world with people who were buried beneath the ruins of history came alive. The novel was translated into Vietnamese by Duong Tuong.
“The Tin Drum” was turned into a film and won the Golden Palm Award at the 1979 Cannes Film Festival and an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1980.
Günter Grass (1927-2015) is one of the greatest German writers who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999 “because he painted the forgotten face of history in bright black fables”.
