From the organizer:

Join us in the final part of a 4-part series presented by Douglas Holwerda, a Hanoi-based psychotherapist. The purpose of these talks is to increase awareness of basic principles used in psychotherapy that can help an individual to better know themselves, how they relate to others and to find their place in the world. Note that each lecture is completely stand-alone, talking about different subjects. No need to commit to all 4 and no need to have been to any prior lectures.

Lecture Four: Empowerment Psychology as a Platform for Spiritual Development

In the first two lectures we dealt with how a person can be empowered by gaining awareness of aspects of their inner life. Regulating emotions, understanding the limitations of will and the value of acceptance, knowing how negative judgement results from aligning our expectations with our ideals rather than the realities of life and gaining empowerment by understanding boundaries and living from the inside out.

Lecture 3 took place as an interview format and moves the focus from our inner world to the world we live in. Contemporary times create subliminal challenges that many of us do not fully realize. One topic that has many ramifications that influence each of us is the rate of change. While it is difficult to measure the effects change has on each of us, we can consider some of the impacts that we are better off knowing about.

In lecture 4 we will tie together the three previous lectures and attempt to articulate the ways in which a person can attain ways of being that are approximations of humanity’s highest potentials. Borrowing from the wisdom of psychologists William James, Abraham Maslow, Carl Jung and others, we will explore what it looks like when individuals follow a path that starts by looking inward, gaining self knowledge and self awareness, and leads to a liberated sense of self, at peace with oneself and one’s place in the world. Specific topics will include the creative process, ideals in the meaning-making process, and fundamentals of wisdom.
