HCMC – Ballet Performance “The Legend Lives On”
Sat 19 May 2018, 8 pm
HCMC Opera House
From the organizer:
The HBSO will stage its ballet about the American War (known elsewhere as the Vietnam War), “The Legend Lives On”, on May 19, 2018 at the Saigon Opera House.
The war is over, but the heroic songs, love songs that once adorned it and the faith that Vietnamese people held in the Party and Great Uncle Ho Chi Minh will live on forever. The era produced songs that touched the spirit and memory of every human being. When listening to these songs and watching enactments of the moments of war, viewers suddenly find themselves feeling strong, inspired, and generally more confident in life. That is the concept behind the dance drama “The Legend Lives On”, a staged performance involving 4 scenes, lasting 60 to 70 minutes.
THEME: The Southern Revolution from 1954 to 1975
The story focuses on Má Bảy (Mother Bảy)’s family, which represents many ordinary families in southern Vietnam. They were resilient, undaunted, and determined to overcome all the cruelty of war right up to the final victory.
CHARACTERS:
1. Má Bảy, a secret messenger
2. Má Bảy’s husband, a revolutionary
3. Má Bảy’s children:
– Hai Hoa, her daughter, a student and a guerrilla
– Út Bình, her son, a student and a soldier
4. Villains – some police officers and soldiers
5. Groups of men and women, pupils, soldiers…
SYNOPSIS:
Once upon a time, the country was divided, with the South turned into a dark prison. Má Bảy’s family represents every other family who overcame the pain and devastation of war, joining the Dong Khoi (Mass Uprising) movement in the southern province of Ben Tre in 1960.
Má Bảy and her family were assigned missions in the city’s center. Hiding important papers in her carrying pole, Má Bảy successfully delivered the documents to its receivers without being discovered. Following their mother’s example, Hai Hoa and Út Bình joined a student’s performance team and did what they can to fight the enemy.
