HCMC – A Night of Antonin Dvorak
Tue 19 Jun 2018, 8 pm
HCMC Opera House
From the organizer:
There can’t be any doubt that Dvorak’s Cello Concerto is the finest concerto for cello and orchestra ever written. It will be performed in the Saigon Opera House by the HBSO orchestra and soloist on June 19.
There hadn’t been many cello concertos prior to Dvorak’s. CPE Bach wrote three in the 18th century, and Haydn also wrote several. Schumann wrote one, but it was never performed in his lifetime.
Antonin Dvorak wrote this concerto while living in the United States, where he had been appointed Director of the New York Conservatory of Music. This concerto, and the New World Symphony, were the main products of his three-year stay in the country.
Along with the Cello Concerto, the HBSO orchestra will play Dvorak’s Symphony Number 8. This is a very different composition. It is a joyous work, with rural themes, in many ways comparable to Beethoven’s Symphony Number 6, the “pastoral”.
The cellist in the Saigon Opera House will be Ngo Hoang Quan. He was born into a family of musicians and was taught the cello by his father, the composer Hoang Duong, beginning at the age of five. After five years studying in Russia, he started to work with the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra. He considers a symphony orchestra to be the finest vehicle for musical expression there is. Prior to a performance, he will practice for four to five hours a day.
Special guest conductor on this occasion will be Honna Tetsuji. Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, he has made many CD recordings with Japanese and other orchestras.
