You are invited to the seminar “Overview on the history of French comic books until 2000” with the participation of our guest speaker Thierry Groensteen, director of the International Center for Comics and Image (CNBDI) in Angoulême.
Rodolphe Töpffer (1798-1846), a French-speaking Swiss author, was known as the “inventor” of comic books. Until the end of the 19th century, comic books developed at a slow pace, usually appeared as a picture books or on several satirical journals. A while after, they were shadowed when magazines for kids came to the market, then came the rise of American comic books. After World War II, a Belgian school became the pioneer by publishing the two weekly comic series: Tintin and Spirou. From the late 1960s, French comic books thrived and saw significant innovations. The number of comic albums rose, and few by few, new genres appeared: romantic-comedy, autobiography, documentary, etc…
Through studying hundreds of comics, comics historian Thierry Groensteen retraces the history of comic books and pays tribute to the greatest comic artists up until the beginning of the 21st century in this seminar-exhibition held at L’Espace.
