From VCCA:

Video art artist Hiraki Sawa attracted the attention of the international art community even before he attended London’s Slade School of Fine Art in 2005. He started with videos depicting a miniature world made of angles, fractures, surfaces,… in his own apartment in the capital of England, turning tedious furniture into a lively space.

Hiraki Sawa “juggled” the rules of time and space, challenging common senses, much like a composer putting all the familiar melodies together to create a brand new piece. Hiraki Sawa drew inspiration from mundane things in the everyday life, it could be playing on a rocking horse as a child, his passion for airplanes, or even his own perception on the Japanese – English cultural blend that he experienced.

With Hiraki Sawa, the film-making process is also a means for the artist to alter time – Time could be moving fast, or slow, it is stretched, making the audience feel like the objects and people in the video could just step in and out of the frame. By using surreal digital images, Hiraki Sawa reflects on the passing moments that evoke in us strange memories.

In the framework of the exhibition “Fragments” which presents Hiraki Sawa’s video art, we invite you to the art discussion “Engrave in time: The possibilities of video art” at 10.30 am this Saturday at the Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA) to listen to the artist’s sharing on his passion with time, the process it took to come up with the idea and visuals, opening possibilities that lies within video art – his genre.
