From L’Espace:
You are invited to a discussion of the book “Sang Tay – Muoi thang o Phap” (rough translation: Going West – 10 months in France) by Dao Trinh Nhat (Pham Van Anh).
Dao Trinh Nhat (1900-1951) has the courtesy name of Quan Chi, and his pen names include: Van Anh, Pham Van Anh,… He was born in Hue city; though his hometown was in Thuong Phan commune, Dong Chan, Quynh Coi (now known as Quynh Hoang commune, Quynh Phu district, Thai Binh province). He was a writer, journalist, historical-cultural researcher, and well-known translator at the first half of the 20th century.
During the 10 months living in France, he joined in the socio-political scene and started to realized the differences, both positive and negative, of the democratic capitalist society in France. More than that, many times he mentioned the socialist party’s political activities and the social struggle between these parties: class conflict, colonial war, the gap between the rich and the poor. After almost a century, the French society nowadays has changed drastically with exponential development. However, Pham Van Anh’s records still, more or less, show the French society at the times and the oppression, the manipulation and the exploitation of capitalism towards the working class in the colonies as well as in the metropolitan states…
