HCMC – A Night of Film Music
29 and 30 Sep 2018, 8 pm
HCMC Opera House
From the organizer:
The Ho Chi Minh City Ballet and Symphony Orchestra will present a night devoted to film music in the Saigon Opera House on September 29 and 30, starting at 8pm.
The most substantial work in this important concert is a Suite for Violin and Orchestra from the 1998 film “The Red Violin”. It was composed by the US classical composer John Corigliano, and the original violinist was Joshua Bell. The film starred Samuel L. Jackson, Carlo Cecchi and Sylvia Chang.
In Saigon, the solo violinist will be Nguyen Huu Khoi Nam. He was heard in September 2016 playing Saint-Saens’ Violin Concerto in B Minor, and was noted then for his self-effacing approach and musical intelligence.
Later in the concert, Nguyen Huu Khoi Nam will appear as the solo violinist in “Songs from a Secret Garden”, music composed by Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry and Norwegian composer Rolf Lovland.
It may be surprising to see the name Dolly Parton in an HBSO program, but there she is as composer of “I will always Love You”, which she wrote and recorded in 1973. Whitney Houston recorded it again for use in the 1992 film The Bodyguard.
Were these items chosen for their musical excellence or because of the celebrity of the films they appeared in? Both, probably.
Other films to feature on this special evening are Titanic, Hercules, and Frozen. From Titanic (1997) comes “My Heart Will Go On”, sung by soprano Pham Khanh Ngoc. From Hercules (2014) is the Hercules Suite, and from Frozen (2013) “Let it Go”, featuring soloist Vo Ha Tram, with orchestration by HBSO Managing and Artistic Director Tran Vuong Thach.
