HS Workshop: Photography and Materiality
11 – 20 Oct 2018
Heritage Space, 1st Floor, Dolphin Plaza
6 Nguyen Hoang / 28 Tran Binh, My Dinh 2, Hanoi
From Heritage Space:
Heritage Space invites you to join HS Creative Workshop on ‘Photography and Materiality. An Introduction’ by German artist Christoph Brueckner and Vietnamese Germany-based artists Nam Nguyen.
Most photographers choose to follow the traditional method of approaching and creating their works; finding subjects, taking pictures of or about them then presenting it in a formal way— prints, books and projections. Photography has often been mistakenly constituted as merely image, as a purely visual medium. The current focus on materiality is in some ways a response to that.
Why should photography as art break the boundaries of being framed and move into other aspects of arts and handcrafting? Does material really matter as a tool of expressing photography? Which possibilities do we have to present our pictures?
This workshop aims to discover and experience new materials for photography, not only as a tool for exhibiting but to enrich our critical thinking about materiality. During this -days-workshop, participants will have the opportunities to discuss the topic of materiality and how to apply this thinking into their artwork. In order to put the mentioned theories into practice, participants will have the chance to explore screen-printing techniques and lasers cut-outs. A group exhibition will be held to show the participants’ work, process and results.
