Exhibition “Escaping The Flat Surface”
Exhibition: 22 – 26 Oct 2018
Vui Studio
3c Tong Duy Tan, Hanoi
From Heritage Space:
Since its inception, photography has become a dominant instrument in re-imagining reality to such an extent that, for a long time, the concept of photography has been almost identified with the “documentary” image. And when talking about photography, people usually talk about the photo’s content – ie the ‘imagery’ – and forget about the role of the material to create the photo itself.
The development of photo editing tools in today’s world raises the issue: Should photography be tasked with speaking the truth and representing life as it is? Do photos need to contain a humane message or an emotional story? Is photography a mere visual tool?
The tendency to break the boundaries of visual art forms in contemporary art also makes photographic artists question themselves: Can photography be presented with a different form, arouse other sensations or suggest other ways of thinking? In short, do we need to create within the boundaries of the frame?
This exhibition are the work of seven artists after a week practicing at the Workshop ‘Photography and Materiality. An Introduction’ by Christoph Brueckner and Nam Nguyen. The exhibition does not necessarily answer all of the above questions, but it will definitely be an open invitation for audiences to approach photography in a new and interesting perspective.
