Film director Tran Anh Hung told Toong when choosing “A Man Escaped” for the event: “Robert Bresson is the essence of cinema language focusing on human soul and mental life, a giant in world cinema.”

Based on the real life story of a prison break of during the world war, Robert Bresson brought “A Man Escaped” to a multi-layered philosophic story about existence. Not only does it has a touching storyline, but the unique way of narration also made Robert Bresson’s work one of the 100 masterpieces of world cinema (from Sight&Sound).

A night enjoying pure cinema, talking with film director Tran Anh Hung and journalist Dung Bui, we invite you to join Toong in “Flashback Now 01 | A Man Escaped”.

The event will take place simultaneously at Toong Trang Thi (Hanoi) and Toong 126 Minh Khai (HCMC).

▪ Considered the soul of French cinema, Robert Bresson created enticing cinema piece with such purity – to the point where he rejected complicated machine movement, simplify the character system in order to strongly express the emotions and desire of humankind. Cinema enthusiasts must already have known about these Robert’s movies: A Man Escaped (1956), Pickpocket (1959), The Trial of Joan of Arc (1962), Balthazar (1966), Four Nights of a Dreamer (1971).

▪ Film director Tran Anh Hung is known as a film producer who breaks out from traditional structures through aesthetics blended between philosophy, beauty, and most sophisticated emotions. People adore his 3 works about Vietnam: The Scent of Green Papaya (1993), Cyclo (1994), The Vertical Ray of the Sun (2000), his other notable works include Norwegian Wood (2010) and Éternité (2016).

▪ Flashback Now is a cinema space where classics from world cinema are shown through the eye of Tran Anh Hung, a prominent member of Toong community.
