Heritage Space is pleased to present “UPDATING THE UPCYCLES – Turning Waste into Taste in S.E.A” a presentation by Eggarat Wongcharit, regional curator of Southeast Asia for Pure Gold world tour exhibition. We invite to the Talk local designer Quốc Đạt from Think Playgrounds – Nghĩ về Sân Chơi trong phố and local environmental activist Giang Nguyen, co-founder of Nói Không Với Túi Nylon (Say No to Plastic Bags) and Go Eco Hanoi to open up a deeper dialog and exchange knowledge on the environmental friendly approaches in design as well as urgent environmental issues we are facing now. The Talk is a part of Pure Gold project initiated by ifa and the Goethe-Institut Hanoi and Heritage Space.

Eggarat Wongcharit, a Thai designer who’s been pioneering design in Thailand for decades will be sharing his experiences, thoughts and cases of upcycling design items ranges from recyclable materials to new materials invention of South East Asian products produced from industrial wastes.

He will reflect how ideas and creativities can bring about innovations. Some heavy industrial case of Thailand Petroleum and Trading company’s projects (PTT) that helps supporting local creators/designers to come up with futuristic design innovations will be shown to share ideas on how big industries can help resolving environmental issues. Moreover, a case of King Rama 9 th ’s royal project that attempted to uplift the standard of living in suburban areas of Thailand will also reflect the process of “turning waste into taste” by upcycling wastes into crafts.

Different cases of creative ideas from local Thai designers, manufacturers and some other South East Asian cases will also be presented to bring about a further discussion on upcycling cases and lead into new ideas for Vietnam’s upcycling situation.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

After 10 years of educating and experiencing design in New York and Milan, Eggarat finally settled in Thailand to discover the origin of Thai design root. Through out the whole 20 years of experiencing both theoretical design education and realistic practice, Eggarat have settled his own design atelier in 2002. He has established a furniture brand product called “Crafactor” and start exporting furniture and home accessories that express Thai design attitude to global market. With Eggarat’s design direction to infuse the local wisdom of South East Asian crafts together with modern massive technology, the design products has gained reputation among global buyers as a result, the company has received many local and international design awards due to its original characteristics.

Eggarat has been contributing his own design experiences to many local and international design activities including his curatorship for Korea’s Gwangju Design Biennale exhibition and Milan’s Slow hand design exhibition for Department of International Trade Promotion(DITP) to promote Thai designer’s showcases at global scope.

His recent project of Iniala beach hotel in Phuket Thailand has gained himself reputation among global medias and his furniture design collections are popular among 5 stars residences, resorts and boutique hotels around the globe.

“HS-Talk” is a series of presentation and interdisciplinary exchanges between experts from various fields such as Arts, Aesthetics, Architecture, Environment, Economics, Sociology, History, Literature, Philosophy, etc and audiences. The Talk series is built to open up the multidimensional dialogue between academic and practical fields, creativity and research, thereby moving towards eliminating gaps and isolation in the commune and create inspiration in many dimensions to many diverse communities today.
