You are invited to the workshop Japanese Woodblock Prints – Intro to Ukiyo-e starting on 09 Sep 2019.
Ukiyo-e is a traditional Japanese technique used in printmaking in the beginning of the 16th century. During the Edo era, Ukiyo-e prints depict the luxurious life of Japanese noblemen. One notable ukiyo-e print is Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.
Unlike European woodblock printing techniques, Ukiyo-e uses natural materials thus creating a watercolor-like effect on the woodblock prints. Furthermore, with accurate alignment technique, the prints can have many different color layers and gradations.
About the instructor:
Din-sama : Nguyen Thi Tue Thu – graduated with a Master’s degree in Printmaking from Tokyo University of the Arts and a Bachelor of Arts from Wako University (Japan). Din has had more than 7 years of experience in studying and researching woodblock printmaking in Japan.
During the course, we will learn about the art history of woodblock printmaking, carving and fundamental printing techniques, so that the participants can create their own unique designs.
