SiaM vol. 24 will bring you back in time, to the exquisite musical scene of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with two masterpieces: the String Trio Op. 9 No. 3 in C minor (composed in 1790) by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827), and the Piano Quartet Op. 47 in E-flat major (composed in 1842), an exemplar of the Romance period by Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856).

Separated by over half a century, these two pieces were written in quite different styles. If Beethoven’s early String Trio displays the disciplined and shapely structure characteristic of the Classical period (1750 – 1830), then Schumann’s Piano Quartet flourishes in its more personal emotions, typical of the Romantic period (1830 – 1900). That being said, the two compositions do share something: each hold within them an immense force. Using the same C minor key as his iconic Fate Symphony, the String Trio is often described to be a never-ending accumulation of emotions, whereby the music push you further and further into the infinite spaces of your mind. Meanwhile, the Quartet offers something softer but equally tenacious, like the love and liveliness felt in a sun-drenched room.

Drawing from the contrast of the strong, memorable emotions that these two pieces inspire, we could think of no better name for SiaM vol. 24 than “Petrichor”, which refers to the smell of the earth after a rainstorm. Nothing quite compares with the shift in sensations, from hearing the rush of the rain to sensing the damp scent of the earth in the quiet, clear atmosphere after a storm.
