The Grapevine Selection, was initiated by Hanoi Grapevine’s founder – artist Brian Ring in 2013. The exhibition series The Grapevine Selection is an initiative within Hanoi Grapevine’s mission plan, which is to promote Vietnam’s arts and culture at home and abroad.

In 2024, the Hanoi Grapevine team wants to focus on and promote the flexible perspectives and standards of pioneering organisers and individuals who invest in research and private art collections, each with their distinct perspective that is independent and full of aesthetics, as well as transcending the oppressive biases of the current society. Therefore, this year’s art advisory board is diversified, including art researcher/curator Do Tuong Linh, collector/head of an art organisation Ariel Pham, and international researcher/collector Sophie Huang.

With the vision of The Grapevine Selection exhibition as a contribution to the foundation of the creative industry and art market in Vietnam, the choice of space enhances the experience of contemporary works while also partly facilitating a dialogue between history and modernity, tradition and innovation.

ARTIST: NGUYỄN ĐỨC TÍN

Graduating from HCMC University of Fine Arts, Nguyễn Đức Tín first appeared as a painter at the group exhibition “Niềm tin giữa núi rừng” in 2014 in HCMC. He worked for a long time in the field of Graphic Design & Advertising before making a comeback in 2022 with the group exhibition “2T” alongside artist Phạm Văn Thắng.

For his artistic practice, Nguyễn Đức Tín does not have any limitation. With his focus on painting, his works are expressed through a variety of materials and styles, revealing the artist’s tough and straightforward perspective.

Nguyễn Đức Tín’s works, “Breathing like dogs” (2022) & “Creation” (2022) series, are currently on display at the exhbition “The Grapevine Selection | Lựa chọn của Grapevine”.

ARTIST: PHẠM TUẤN TÚ

Phạm Tuấn Tú (b. 1981) is currently living and working in Hanoi. In 2004, he graduated from Industrial Fine Arts College. He is a member of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association and a member of the Hanoi Young Artists Club.

Phạm Tuấn Tú is a prolific artist. His works has been displayed at numerous domestic and international exhibitions. He received the Vietnam – Denmark Cultural Development and Exchange Fund in 2010 and was one of five artists to win the Self-portrait contest of Dogma Prize 2012.

For Phạm Tuấn Tú, “art is so vast that I have no intention to define it to be black or white”. He is continually looking for new materials to express his artistic ideas such as oil paint, dó paper, and old wooden objects. In his most recent solo exhibition “Yet To Be Named” (Hanoi Studio Gallery, 2024), his lacquer paintings on wooden frames present the story of Vietnamese spiritual world.
