We are stoked to welcome you back to Read with us, a series of thematic photobook showcases initiated by Matca. This iteration, Birds, Beasts & Us, curated by Nguyen Phuong Thao, explores the representation of animals in photography. The 9 selected titles portray living beings that share our spaces in varied ways, roaming freely or bound to us, existing in the margins or held close in our care. She writes:
“While ever-present in our sight, animals remain at a distance. We see them as companions, commodities, or fleeting figures in the landscape, but rarely do we see them as they are. Even those closest to us carry lives we will never truly touch. […] The photographs in these books embody this tension, capturing animals as both familiar and foreign, near yet unreachable. Here, animals are neither metaphors nor mere reflections of our fears and desires. They exist on their own terms, deserving to be seen as such.”
