Finest Projects 2024-2025: Heritage of Future Past

HERITAGE OF FUTURE PAST

About project: “Heritage of Future Past” is a project initiated by the British Council that employs innovative approaches, enabling a variety of communities to contribute to and benefit from the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, creating inclusive and sustainable growth opportunities in the heritage sector.

The project is implemented across two closely-linked programming strands: Community Culture Heritage, which focuses on the safeguarding of cultural heritage within the project’s target communities; and Film-Archive-Music Lab (FAMLAB), which reaches out to the creative industry at large to serve as a catalyst for collaborative works that engage with Vietnam’s music and film heritage via contemporary pathways.

In 2024, 10 project teams received support from the programme to digitise the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of communities, groups, and individuals who have participated in the project “Heritage of Future Past” over the past 4 years. These include the ‘dry funeral’ of the White Hmong people in Ha Giang Province; conservation and digitisation of patterns in hát bội (a traditional Vietnamese opera) at HCMC Theatre of Hát Bội; preservation of the “hát – nói” (singing and speaking) format in the art of hát bội; conservation of Bahnar folk songs; silver engraving of the Dao Tien people in Bac Kan Province; weaving techniques of the Mnong people in Dak Lak Province; chanting songs of the Thai Do people in Nghe An; dó paper in Dong Cao Village, Bac Ninh Province; Cham folk songs; and the forest deity worship rituals of the Pu Pheo people in Ha Giang.

The project also carried out the Cultural Heritage Grant Programme, in collaboration with the Center for Research and Promotion of Cultural Heritage (CCH), to support communities and individuals in practising heritage, identifying and addressing challenges in the protection of cultural heritage in alignment with sustainable development. The programme has confirmed its support for 9 project teams in 2025.

Other notable activities include: online talks on preserving, conserving, and developing community heritage, and a discussion focusing on 4 topics: Heritage Entrepreneurship; Design, Preservation and Communication; Tourism and Heritage Legacy; Arts, Creativity, Technology and Experimentation related to Heritage within the framework of Connecting Session: Cultural Heritage and Creativity.
