Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Born on May 31st, 1945 Rainer Werner Fassbinder became not only one of the most popular but also most controversial German directors. After leaving high school shortly before graduating, he attended acting school for three years. His efforts to apply to the “German Film and Television Academy” all failed. So he decided to go his own way. In 1967, having made two short movies, he joined the Munich “Action-Theater”. When the group dissolved, he established “antitheater”. This ensemble aroused considerable attention with its unconventional theatre and television plays. In 1968 Fassbinder’s first full-length film “Die Liebe ist kälter als der Tod” (Love is Colder than Death) was released. Finally in 1969 he had his breakthrough with the movie version of “Katzelmacher”.
By the time of his premature death in 1982 he had completed 44 cinema and television films, mostly about characters incompatible with the ideals of society.
