CHARAI! CHARAI! CHARAI!
What a life they lead!
May 11 in Jakarta and on the 12th performing in Hanoi.
Charai celebrates her voice, the way she can move her body, and the curves of that body in its clinging black dress that delightfully accentuates those almost addictive curves and mounds that most middle aged women are desperately attempting to camouflage (if they’re not anorexialy turning themselves into slender sticks).
Her backing group of drums, violin, bass, accordion, and guitar – played by her partner and arranger, Mathias Duplessy is so sympatico with her that the whole night is a joyous celebration of Moroccan, French, Spanish, et al, world music. After a few soulful tunes and a launch into a high energy bracket you can see why she and her friends will be busy at festivals and concerts all over France, Spain, Belgium and Morocco come the northern hemisphere summer.
She’s obviously famous in France, as the venue seemed to be packed with Latin flavored Francophiles which was a blessing because when a few in the audience rose to their feet and joined Charai as she blended her body with the beat, most of the mass joined in, in a great celebration of what good world music can do for your rhythmic soul – and your muscles.
As a native born Moroccan, the North African sounds and languid, sensual body moves are a feature of her show. She adds a great sense of drama to her songs and you can imagine her doing a marvelous Fado.
Her slow and dreamy songs are seductive. Her South American groove and her high energy Flamenco style numbers are electric.
A wonderfully enthusiastic and exercising night.
Thanks again L’Espace and the French….and all at only 100 000 VND a pop!
