Vu Dan Tan (1946 -2009), one of the leading figures in Vietnamese contemporary art, was honoured recently with a major solo exhibition in Russia, almost one year after his death.

The tributes included an exhibition of rarely seen early works, and the premiere performance of a classical music piece composed by Vu Dan Tan in honour of Hanoi’s 1000th birthday

Salon Natasha writes:
Vu Dan Tan (1946 -2009) lived in Astrakhan (Russia) in 1987-90 and 1993-94. While he is more known to the art public in Vietnam and abroad as an avant-garde artist of installation and recycled sculptural objects, during his stay in Russia he worked as a street artist, creating a series of works featuring the unique character of this ancient city on the border of Europe and Asia.

The present exhibition presents the artist’s sketches – expressive portraits of Astrakhan people: lyrical and temperamental images of women, innocent and open children’s faces, typical scenery of Gypsy life.

The exhibition was accompanied by a concert of the artist’s classical music: in 2008-09 Vu Dan Tan composed a concert entitled “Hanoian” (Nguoi Ha Noi) devoted to the 1000 years anniversary of his beloved city. The fragment of this concert was played by two laureates of international competitions: Anna Lyagaeva – piano and Vardan Babahanyan – flute.

The exhibition coincides with 1000 years anniversary of Hanoi and 1 year death anniversary of the artist. Uniting the visual images of people of Astrakhan with the sound associations from Hanoi citizens’ life, the event builds an artistic bridge between two cities and two cultures.
