Scott Ezell – Readings and Publications
American poet and musician Scott Ezell is a familiar face on Hanoi experimental music stages where he performs with local musicians. Below is news of a recent reading in Bangkok, a new book release, and links to purchase his books.

I’m the editor and co-author of Songs from a Yahi Bow, just released in the States, a collection of poems about Ishi, the last Native American to live by indigenous hunting and gathering in the continental United States. In addition to my poems and an essay on Ishi’s relevance to contemporary society, this book includes poetry by Pulitzer Prize winner Yusef Komunyakaa, and an essay by the religious philosopher Thomas Merton, who explores the genocide of American Indians in terms of the extermination philosophy of the American war in Vietnam.

Last March Scott read from his books Petroglyph Americana and Songs from a Yahi Bow, and from his poem-cycle “Hanoi Rhapsodies“, at the Neilson Hays Library, Bangkok. The event focused on poems exploring the interface between Western and Asian landscapes and cultures, and between industrial and organic aspects of contemporary life. In addition, Scott recited several of his folksongs as poems, and then performed them as songs, as a way to explore the relationship between poetry and music.
Finally, “Hanoi Rhapsodies“, read publicly for the first time at Scott’s March reading in Bangkok, is due to be published in the fall 2011 issue of Asia Literary Review. The ALR poetry editor called “Hanoi Rhapsodies” “a view of Hanoi that is distinctively dystopian and authentically visceral, while retaining a strong humane sensibility.”
