Join the master dyer Sam Thi Tinh, a Thai ethnic woman who was born in traditional brocade Hoa Tien village of Quy Chau – Nghe An, grew up with her grand-mother, mother and others Thai women who are expert artisans, learned how to weave, dye and embroider since her childhood, and lives in Hanoi now to sustain and develop the traditional craftsmanship for the Hoa Tien brocade cooperative – founded and led by her mom since 2010.
During the workshop, we will learn of her ancient techniques and masterful use of working with natural dyes taken from the garden, grey from tea leaves, yellow from gelsemiaceae known as Pui root in Thai, lime green from terminalia catappa leaves, red from lac ant. We will also explore the traditional Japanese technique of Shibori fold and tie-dyeing to create repeat pattern on different material of fabrics like hemp, cotton or silk.
Come away with a dyed samples fabrics to make in to something like cushion, wall décor hanging or others crafts. We will also have a selection of silk/hemp/cotton for sales by meter.
LANGUAGE: Vietnamese by the trainee Sam Thi Tinh. English and French translation will be provided.
COST: 500,000 VND (25$), including 50 cm width of silk and samples of the colours we use on the day.
