With its geographical as well as military characteristics, its harshness and its unexpected outcome, Dien Bien Phu was one of the few battles of the Indochina war to receive so much media coverage, and the only one to attract such attention in the world. From the very start, it had acquired the status of a world event.

Several Franco-Vietnamese seminars were devoted to this battle, particularly on its 50th and 60th anniversaries. The aim now is to go beyond a political-military “historical battle” by focusing on the local, international and memory aspects of this battle.
