Sau 2 bộ phim về tình yêu được trình chiếu vào cuối tuần trước, chúng tôi sẽ tiếp tục gửi tới các bạn một tác phẩm lấy đề tài về giáng sinh khác. Đó là It’s a Wonderful Life của đạo diễn Frank Capra.
It’s a Wonderful Life is a 1946 American Christmas fantasy comedy-drama film produced and directed by Frank Capra, based on the short story “The Greatest Gift”, which Philip Van Doren Stern wrote in 1939 and privately published in 1945. The film is considered one of the most loved films in American cinema and has become traditional viewing during the Christmas season, alongside popular classics such as Holiday Inn, A Christmas Carol, White Christmas, Meet Me in St. Louis and Miracle on 34th Street.
The film stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a man who has given up his dreams in order to help others and whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve brings about the intervention of his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody (Henry Travers). Clarence shows George all the lives he has touched and how different life in his community of Bedford Falls would be had he never been born.
Despite initially performing poorly at the box office due to high production costs and stiff competition at the time of its release, the film has come to be regarded as a classic and is a staple of Christmas television around the world. Theatrically, the film’s break-even point was actually $6.3 million, approximately twice the production cost, a figure it never came close to achieving in its initial release. An appraisal in 2006 reported: “Although it was not the complete box office failure that today everyone believes … it was initially a major disappointment and confirmed, at least to the studios, that Capra was no longer capable of turning out the populist features that made his films the must-see, money-making events they once were.”
It’s a Wonderful Life is considered one of the most critically acclaimed films ever made. It was nominated for five Oscars and has been recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, placing number 11 on its initial 1998 greatest movie list, and would also place number one on its list of the most inspirational American films of all time.

It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) là một bộ phim Mỹ sản xuất và đạo diễn bởi Frank Capra và được phát triển từ truyện ngắn “The Greatest Gift” của Philip Van Doren Stern.
Bộ phim lấy bối cảnh một thị trấn hư cấu – Bedford Falls – sau Thế chiến II. Nhân vật nam chính George Bailey (James Stewart), một người đàn ông có ý định tự sát vào đêm Giáng sinh, đã gặp thiên thần hộ mệnh Clarence Odbody (Henry Travers), người được phái xuống để giúp đỡ George những lúc anh cần. Phần lớn bộ phim xoay quanh cuộc sống trước đó của George qua sự thuật lại của Franklin và Joseph, thiên thần vô hình đang chuẩn bị cho Clarence thực hiện sứ mệnh cứu rỗi George. Qua đó khán giả có thể thấy tất cả những người có liên quan tới George và những thay đổi do anh đem đến cho cuộc đời.
Bộ phim được xếp vào hàng kinh điển và là một phần chủ yếu của truyền hình giáng sinh trên toàn thế giới, nhưng mặc dù chi phí sản xuất lớn và được đánh giá rất cao trong các bảng xếp hạng nhưng lại thất bại về mặt doanh thu, chỉ thu về được một nửa so với chi phí bỏ ra. It’s a Wonderful Life cho đến nay đã thất lạc bản quyền, và đã được coi như tài sản chung của nhân loại.
It’s a Wonderful Life được 5 đề cử Oscar, tuy không đoạt được giải nào nhưng bộ phim được Viện phim Mỹ xếp vào hàng 100 phim Mỹ hay nhất trong 100 năm qua, và đứng ở vị trí thứ nhất trong số những bộ phim truyền cảm nhất mọi thời đại.
