What to expect: Film screening, Talk

Discover the magical union of film and dance at our festival’s opening day! This is a unique opportunity to discover 6 artists working at the crossroads of dance and cinema: Saigon Souls, Molecules, Tomorrow without us, Boyant, Midland, and It will be a disconcerted day in a starless moonless night. Dance is conventionally an ephemeral art, which is supposed to disappear as soon as it is finished. But with dance films, the artists are giving new perspectives on movements through the lens of the camera.

The screenings will be followed by a talk show with the filmmakers themselves.

Film 1: Saigon Souls – Robin Mahieux

“Saigon Souls” is a representation of a certain mentality: Regardless of whether you have just arrived, recently returned, or have lived here your entire life, you can consider yourself a true Saigon-ese if you identify as such. This art film takes viewers on a journey to discover the soul of its creators – the people of Saigon and the ever-evolving landscape they inhabit.

Film 2: Molecules – Chinh Ba

A one-minute sculpture of dance shown through perspective distortion and filmed in Vietnam, Italy, and Switzerland. Within this world, molecules move unpredictably through space, governed by the complex interplay between attraction, repulsion, and automation. Explore the fascinating and intricate relationships between these elements, and discover the beauty of chaos in motion.

Film 3: Ngày mai còn ai (Tomorrow without us) – La Zung

30 Vietnamese artists have come together to create an innovative music video that delivers a powerful message of sustainability by the means of experimental dance. The video tells the story of Mai, a young woman who dreams of escaping her trash-filled home, while her mother doubts that a different future would be at all possible.

Film 4: Bồng Bềnh/Buoyant – Đoàn Thanh Toàn & Nguyễn Lê Hoàng Phúc

A fairy tale takes place along the waters, featuring a fisherman who smokes, a mermaid who serves, and their two jolly friends.

Film 5: Midland (Trung du) – Kim-Sanh Châu

An introduction from Kim-Sanh Châu:
“MIDLAND was created in deep solitude. In the shadow of dawn I travelled through Quebec on my small motorbike from 1976 in order to capture these images. Through an intimate lens, this video addresses land ownership, troubled by the simultaneous beauty and violence that stems from the feeling of belonging, of ownership, and their opposites.”

Film 6: It will be a disconcerted day in a starless moonless night – Directed by Red and choreographed by Kim

This experimental short film tells a moment of bodily expression, that of a man dancing and communing with nature, reflecting an image of himself that is distorted and fantasized in turn. It includes movement practices from different backgrounds such as Hip-Hop Experimental, múa đương đại Ấn Độ và Buto.

The film is not intended to be a clear narrative that follows a logical sequence of events. Instead, it showcases visible and deep elements of the man’s movement expressed through various perspectives, such as slow-motion shots, extreme close-ups, and differential focus distances.

Talk: Pictures in motion / Bodies in movements

The aim of this talk is to offer a new perspective on film selection, through the eyes of the filmmakers themselves. It is also a unique opportunity for the audience to meet the artists and ask them question
