Director: Paolo Sorrentino
Duration: 133 minutes

Although it takes politics as its subject, “The Pardon” (La Grazia) explores a rarely seen side of the political arena. Rather than centering on power struggles, the film poses a question that seems gentle but is hard to answer: where is the fragile line between morality and justice?
The film follows Mariano De Santis during the final six months of his term as President of Italy. A resolute man with deeply held Catholic values, he must confront the debate over a bill concerning assisted dying while also deciding on two pardon petitions. Amid these political and legal choices, Mariano must also look back on his own wounds and decisions as a human being, a husband, and a father.
With “The Pardon”, Paolo Sorrentino continues to show his sensitivity and empathy for characters caught between power and deeply personal questions, qualities already present in “The Great Beauty” (La grande bellezza) and “The Young Pope” (Il giovane papa).
“The Pardon” was chosen as the opening film of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, where Toni Servillo won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor. At the 2026 Nastri d’Argento Awards, the film took home eight prizes, including Best Film and Best Director for Paolo Sorrentino.
