Set in the summer of the late 1980s, “My Tennis Maestro” (Il Maestro) centers on Felice, a promising 13-year-old on the tennis court. His childhood revolves almost entirely around grueling drills and the expectations of his father, Pietro, who wants him to become a champion. Everything changes when Pietro turns to Raul Gatti, a former player who once reached the round of 16 at the Foro Italico, and asks him to accompany Felice through the national tournament circuit. From there, the two begin a journey along the Italian coast: amid defeats, lies, and unexpected encounters, Felice gradually discovers freedom, while Raul must face his own failures and the broken pieces of his life.

Though it might seem predictable, with the familiar setup of a gifted boy and a seasoned mentor, “My Tennis Maestro” keeps opening up surprising directions. Between matches, travels, and secrets slowly coming to light, the film becomes a story about freedom, failure, and the deep bond that forms between two people from different generations.

“My Tennis Maestro” received two nominations at the 2026 David di Donatello Awards, including Best Editing for Giogiò Franchini. The film also earned over 2 million euros at the Italian box office and drew many positive reviews for the performances of Pierfrancesco Favino and Tiziano Menichelli.
