“Primavera” (Spring) is the first concerto in Antonio Vivaldi’s famous “The Four Seasons”. Inspired by Vivaldi’s music and era, the film of the same name, directed by Damiano Michieletto, tells the story of Cecilia, a young female artist torn between her aspiration to pursue music and the limits that society imposes on her life.
Cecilia, a gifted orphaned violinist, has spent most of her life at the Ospedale della Pietà orphanage in Venice. Under Vivaldi’s guidance, her talent blossoms, and for the first time, Cecilia takes her artistic path seriously. But as the saying goes, “beauty and talent are often cursed with misfortune”: her gift cannot protect her from an arranged marriage that threatens to force her to give up music. Cecilia tries to escape the fate laid out for her, amid the harsh constraints of the society of her time. In the end, can music lead Cecilia to freedom, or must she find another path for herself?
Alongside Cecilia’s struggle, the film interweaves Vivaldi’s creative journey, portraying Venice as both a source of inspiration and a stifling space for those who wish to break free of the limits society sets.
“Primavera” had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2025, before winning the Audience Award for International Feature at the Chicago International Film Festival that same year. At the 2026 David di Donatello Awards, the film received seven nominations and won four awards, including Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, Best Hairstyling, and Best Sound.
