Director: Francesco Sossai
Duration: 101 minutes

Funny, quirky, and at times so bittersweet it makes you laugh, “The Last One for the Road” (Le Città Di Pianura) follows Carlobianchi and Doriano, two middle-aged men with a taste for drink, on a journey across the plains of the Veneto as they chase rumors of money buried by their old friend Genio. Along the way, they meet Giulio, a shy architecture student heartbroken over an unrequited love. And so the three lost souls set off together, though none of them really knows where they are going.
With their unfinished stories and the familiar question “how about one last drink?”, their trip meanders through taverns, towns, and the Italian countryside. Lurking beneath the endless drinking sessions is a sadness for lives that have veered off course, communities that are slowly disappearing, and old values left behind in the churn of progress.
“The Last One for the Road” was selected for the Un Certain Regard section at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. At the 2026 David di Donatello Awards, the film won eight prizes out of 16 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director for Francesco Sossai, Best Actor for Sergio Romano (as Carlobianchi), and Best Original Screenplay.
