“seasonal disorientation” begins with the familiar feeling of returning to a city that somehow no longer feels the same. Hanoi appears through layers of haze and dust, where the boundaries between the urban and the ecological, memory and the present, reality and illusion quietly blur into one another.
Thùy Anh’s open studio is an immediate response to the city upon her return from Berlin, where she participated in a residency at Spreepark Art Space as part of Ecological Futures – an international initiative launched in 2023 by the Goethe-Institut Global and ARCH+. Ecological Futures is a long-term project exploring ecological and social transformation by bringing together practitioners from the fields of urbanism, art, culture, and local communities to address contemporary ecological challenges through research, exchange, and situated practices across cities worldwide. From 2026 to 2027, the project collaborates with Spreepark Art Space and Goethe-Instituts across different countries to develop a series of international residencies. Thùy Anh is the first artist invited by Goethe-Institut Hanoi and its partners to participate in the programme, joining the residency from March to April 2026.
Inspired by the methodologies and experimental tools developed during the residency, and driven by a desire to reimagine them within the local context and community, the open studio in Hanoi unfolds through sound, moving image, performance, and edible olfactory interactions. Together, these elements create a multisensory experience, inviting visitors to wander through the layered ecologies of Hanoi’s urban landscape.
The open studio is developed in collaboration with a soundscape response by Nguyễn Nhật Minh and an edible olfactory response by Kiều Anh – Nguyễn.
“seasonal disorientation” is part of Transient Ecologies, organised by Á Space with the support of Goethe-Institut Hanoi.
