Matca Space for Photography

Language: English with Vietnamese translation

From the organizer:

Through a selection of projects spanning his long career, Jun Nguyễn-Hatsushiba will reflect on the evolving relationship between photography and his wider artistic practice, shaped by questions of memory, displacement, identity and local histories.

The talk at Matca traces his journey from early photographic work to the moving-image and installation works for which he is internationally recognised. Beginning with his landmark underwater film featuring cyclo drivers, Memorial Project Nha Trang, Vietnam: Towards the Complex – For the Courageous, the Curious, and the Cowards (2001), Jun will consider how images can evoke histories that are difficult to represent directly. Subsequent works extend these enquiries through performance, sound, installation, and moving image. Made during the pandemic following a hiatus from art, his recent participatory installation While I am Dead – A Prelude to Life brings together more than 200 monochromatic photographs of everyday encounters and personal life in Houston and Tokyo. It is also published as a photobook.

Through these projects, Jun invites us to consider photography not only as a means of representing the world, but also of creating relationships, preserving fleeting encounters and making space for reflection.
