In this artist talk, Cambodian photographer Kim Hak (b. 1981, Battambang) will share an overview of his photographic practice. Beginning with some of his early documentary series, he will then focus in greater depth on two long-term works, “My Beloved” (2012 – 2023) and “Alive” (2014 – ongoing). Drawing on personal and collective memories of the Khmer Rouge regime, these projects explore post-conflict narratives, survivor stories, loss, resilience, and the ways memories of the past continue to shape the present in Cambodia and its diaspora. Both projects have been published as photobooks, with a limited number of copies available for purchase at the event.

About the photographer
Kim Hak was born in 1981 in Battambang City, in north-western Cambodia. Born two years after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime, Hak grew up listening to his parents’ memories of that time, stories of loss and resilience. Today, he uses his art practice to reflect on these memories and raise awareness of Cambodia’s past: to remember, reclaim, and reinterpret the country’s social history before, during, and after the Khmer Rouge era, while connecting the past with the present. His practice extends to a range of themes within the cultural fabric and changing social landscape of his homeland. Hak’s work has been exhibited extensively in Cambodia and internationally in prominent festivals, as well as published in numerous photography journals.
