From VCCA:

Group exhibition “Ươm” (Seeding) by Đoàn Văn Tới, Hà Thúy Hằng và Châu Lê Hoàng Gia marks an important milestone in each artist’s art practice after nearly 1 year of joining VCCA’s Young Artist Nurturing Program. With the support in developing aesthetic thinking, creative ideas and techniques, the exhibition is an opportunity for the artists to execute new ideas and introduce their works to the public, and at the same time familiarize themselves with the professional environment.

The exhibition showcases brand new artworks made in 2019 in various forms such as painting, video, sculpture, installation. “Seeding” represents each artist’s creative endeavor on the journey to discover and experiment with new materials, techniques and forms of presentation that go beyond their previously-learned theories and practices.

Đoàn Văn Tới composed for the first time a large painting that combined different materials – “Field” (3 x 12m). Inspired by the vast, vibrant harvested fields in his childhood, the work contains the artist’s contemplation when confronted with the reality of life, seeing the pure rural landscape gradually disappearing because of the strong impact of development and urbanization. The work shows Doan Van Toi’s great effort in handling painting materials, he skillfully and harmoniously combined oil paints with soil, stone, sand, sawdust, glass, ash – those materials easy to be found in urban areas, with the desire to more or less bring social reality to the canvas.

Continuing the journey to explore the relationship between contemporary society and traditional Vietnamese art, Hà Thúy Hằng presents a video/audio interactive installation called “Những rung động chậm” (Slow vibrations) – inspired by the slow, sophisticated vibes in traditional music. For Hà Thúy Hằng, this is a new experiment for herself – combining sounds (of traditional musicians’ with her own) with visual elements (images of Đào Tam Xuân in motion, a typical figure of Vietnamese Tuồng). Amidst the independent yet interrelate audio and video channels, the audience will be the ones who directly interact, discover the rare, slow vibrations in themselves, thereby define for themselves the ‘soul’ of the work.

The art series by Châu Lê Hoàng Gia is the discovery of diverse art media (painting, sculpture installation, video), and at the same time a spiritual inquiry with self-reflections on one’s existence in the ever-changing surroundings. He uses materials connected to his personal life, trying to dig deeper into their meaning, as a way to record his thoughts on his existence in the spaces he lived in. He also questioned his position in the nature, where he is not bounded by development and social norms.

The “Seeding” exhibition opens from 8 – 25 Nov 2019 at Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA), B1 – R3, Vincom Mega Mall Royal City (72A Nguyen Trai, Thanh Xuan district, Hanoi). Within the framework of the exhibition, VCCA will hold a talk show with the artists on 9 Nov. Detailed program will be updated on the center’s website and official fanpage.
