Following the artistic creations made during her three-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris), Lê Giang “dissected” the perceptions on Vietnam in the colonial era, which was constructed within the French popular culture, based on the archives of the Colonial Exhibitions that took place from 1906 to 1931 in France. The artist looked for images of Indochina, to which she applied a treatment that blurred out the details, to better understand how discourses and narratives shaped the colonial nostalgia.
Lê Giang’s “Of Water and Greenery” hopes to identify the painful obstacles on the way to the compromisation with a conflicting memory, and confronts the myths about Indochina in the context of contemporary Vietnam.
