From the organizer:

Sóng Mây Gallery.S is pleased to present “Inside the Landscape”, a collection of wood sculptures and pencil drawings by Japanese artist Katsumi Mukai, continuing its engagement with his work following the 2024 exhibition “Movement in Silence”.

For Mukai, wood sculpture and drawing on paper are not separate artistic pursuits. Wood and paper serve as materials through which he explores existence, movement, and the states of nature and life. Pieces of wood are cut, carved, hollowed out, and opened up, while continuous pencil lines on paper evoke surfaces alive with subtle vibration. Beneath the quietude of his forms lies a powerful inner energy, shaped by a sustained engagement with materials and the act of making.

Alongside pencil drawings of human faces, the wood sculptures in this selection largely evoke people and family. Their forms are distilled—at times standing alone, at times gathered into groups—inviting associations with presence, connection, and human life. Here, stillness does not mean immobility. Movement continues to emerge through mass, surface, line, and the relationships between forms.

More modest in scale than the 2024 presentation, this exhibition at Sóng Mây Gallery.S offers an opportunity to encounter one aspect of Katsumi Mukai’s artistic practice. It also reveals the consistency of his visual language: an art grounded in a steadfast commitment to materials, close attention to the process of making, and an ability to let experiences of nature and humanity settle into form, line, and hollowed space.
