Tandoor, India Palace, Tiger Beer and Sahaya International along with our other sponsors are joining forces to dedicate this month’s Bollywood Day to an HIV Positive Network in Tamil Nadu, India.
Sahaya International was funded by the Elton John AIDS Foundation to raise awareness about HIV and voluntary counseling and testing in rural South India. Over 30,000 people were reached through existing women’s self-help groups and trained local barbers. Local peer educators were empowered to speak freely about stigmatized topics. As a result of the campaign, over 100 people were diagnosed with HIV–and that is where the project’s funding ended. Sahaya and their Indian counterpart READ supported the creation of a Positive Network, were people diagnosed with the disease can meet regularly, discuss problems and solutions, and speak with local clinicians. Thanks to READ and Sahaya, today everyone in the Positive Network has access to microcredit (small, revolving loans at no interest) and support from the Indian government for the latest anti-retroviral medications.
But the story does not end there. Money that people would normally spend on children’s education or food has been diverted to treating illnesses associated with having HIV. Transportation to the big cities to get medicine and the complicated tests that are necessary for AIDS treatment is expensive, though if anyone misses medications the drugs may stop working for them. When Hanoi resident and Sahaya board member Mirriam Rafiq visited the Positive Network in February of 2008 and asked what people would do if they got small donation from friends in Hanoi, they requested transportation support to Chennai for testing, and supplemental income to for their children’s schooling.
Hanoi’s unique ‘art-house cinema’, is a members-only film society. Memberships are available at the box office for only 100,000VND per year. Members receive regular emails with detailed schedules and reviews of the films. Tickets to the films are by donation.
