In celebrating the Mekong – Japan Exchange Year 2009, the Japan Foundation is set to organize the ‘Flickers: New Media Art from Japan’ exhibition by Minami Takao – a promising Japanese artist, and other such activities as Lecture and Workshop, with the aim of introducing Japanese New Media Art to the Vietnamese viewers.

More than a minor offshoot of contemporary art, new media art, which transcends the traditional genres of painting and sculpture, has become a major trend. Contemporary art exhibitions everywhere regularly show works of new media art. However, the conception of ‘Media Art’ is still vague so far and difficult to describe. In a wider-range consideration, that is the creation of artworks using such eletronic information processing programs as computer graphic, computer animation, computer, etc, and using fictional reality, artificial itelligence, network to interact with the viewers.

This exhibition, the first attempt to introduce Japanese media art in Vietnam, will feature the much talked about young artist Minami Takao, who is known for his installations using video and sound. In his Solo Exhibition: ‘Flickers: New Media Art from Japan’, Minami will present to the Vietnamese viewers his representative work “Fat Shades” (2008), which was the installation with video and image he recorded from his visit to the Mekong area last year, to Vietnam and Cambodia as well as a new installation for this exhibition.

In addition, there will be three other events: an artist talk by Minami Takao, a workshop artist Kuwakubo Ryota and a lecture by Professor Hara Hisako. More information about these events can be found in the previous post on HanoiGrapevine.
