The Bui Gallery is pleased to present “Days and Nights”, an exhibition of new photographs by Jamie Maxtone-Graham, Na Son Nguyen, Aaron Joel Santos and Diego Cortizas.

Through their lens, they show us different images and versions of Hanoi. This is the first edition of Photo VN, a yearly photographic event that will take place at the Bui Gallery. The goal of Photo VN is to show the power of images through the uncommon, unconventional and asserted vision of artists.

“Days and Nights” explores Hanoi in the daytime and at night under very different circumstances. “Days and Nights” can only exist in duality, in an almost co-eternal binary opposition. An object, a being, a city, a story always has two sides. To better understand it, one must look at both. The intention of Photo VN is to put two or more of the perspectives of a city together so as to create a beautiful synergistic whole.

This year marks the 1000th anniversary of the establishment of our lovely city. It explains why with the 1st Photo VN, the Bui Gallery draws particular attention to the contemporary iconography of Hanoi. Photographs here are a record of survival and a testament to the landscape of Hanoi in 2010. In this exhibition, there are four different lenses that scrutinize Hanoi.
