On the occasion of the 90th birthday of the painter Bui Xuan Phai, the Goethe Institut Hanoi presents a selection of his works in honor of his memory.

Bui Xuan Phai (1920-1987), seen by many as the most important Vietnamese painter of the 20th century, was born in Hanoi and spent his entire life here. In his small atelier in 87 Thuoc Bac he worked intensively as a freelance artist and left behind an extensive artistic legacy. He was famous especially for his paintings of the Hanoi ancient city, whose streets and characteristic angles he repeatedly used as subject in his paintings and drawings. Bui Xuan Phai significantly influenced the development of modern art in Vietnam, although it was not until 1984 that he was recognized with the first and only solo exhibition in his lifetime.

We cordially invite you to wander with us in this exhibition through Bui Xuan Phai’s streets in the ancient city and to see Hanoi and its people with his eyes. The artist’s son, Bui Thanh Phuong, has chosen 36 pictures and will give an introduction to his father’s life and work from his own personal perspective. This exhibition is the first in the series “City in Art”, three exhibitions in November that will show Hanoi from the various points of view of Vietnamese and foreign artists.
