From Goethe Institut:
You are invited to a screening of the film “Die Söhne der Großen Bärin” by director Josef Mach.
With “Die Söhne der Großen Bärin”, author Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich created a large multi-volume Indian series, which is considered to be so far unmatched with its authentic representation of the Dakota tribe in the 19th century. In the GDR and the socialist brother countries, the books enjoyed great popularity. The protagonist is the Lakota boy Harka whose father Mattotaupa is the chief of the tribe. The books tell a story about the boy Harka on his journey as he grows up to be chieftain Tokei-ihto.
The 1966 film “Die Söhne der Großen Bärin”, directed by Josef Mach based on the literary series, was one of the most successful DEFA productions of the GDR with Gojko Mitić in the main role, for which Welskopf-Hernrich wrote the screenplay. The huge popularity of the film sets the foundation for the production of the DEFA Indian films.
