From Heritage Space:

Heritage Space is pleased to invite you to the Lecture and Discussion “Beyond Destruction – On war loss, resilience, and the changing meaning of images” led by artist-researcher Till Ansgar Baumhauer from Dresden, Germany. This program is a part of Expert’s Section – MAP 2019, only for artists in the project and representatives from Heritage Space’s partners.

* CONTENT (provided by Till Ansgar Baumhauer):

The lecture to be given with the collective experience of violence and destruction in the context of wartime. During the work on my Ph.D. thesis in artistic research, I investigated on two seemingly very different long-term conflicts and their traces in the visual cultures of their countries and times: the Afghanistan conflict (from 1979 to today) and the „Thirty Years War“ in Central Europe (1618-1648).

Destruction as a violent action resulting in a loss of lives, cultural heritage or identity has often been on one side used as a political tool to suppress diverging cultural identities, but is as well often a „simple collateral damage“. In the best cases, it evokes the ability of resilience allowing the victims of violence and destruction to transform it into creativity and to help themselves.

The lecture will show different forms of aesthetical transformation of destruction experience and discuss also the transformation of images and artifacts in this process. It will as well focus on the artistic work of Till Ansgar Baumhauer who has been dealing with aspects and processes of destruction for several years.

* About the speaker:

Till Ansgar Baumhauer’s artistic strategies come from a conceptual viewpoint. Thus, the variety of materials and visual tools he uses refer to the topics he works on. Each artistic material he uses refers to a function or meaning in the artistic and research processes he is following. One of Baumhauer’s main topics for years has been the depiction of violence and the question of how it can be transformed visually as well as mentally. His Ph.D., for example, was an investigation on the depiction of long-term war violence and its depiction in two seemingly very different conflicts – the Thirty Years War in Germany four hundred years ago, and the contemporary conflict in Afghanistan.

A comparison and sampling of the visual cultures of both conflicts led to a series of artworks dealing with the translatability of memory from one culture to the other.
