After opening CNC#6 with two short films on queer themes, this November, Ostin Fam returns to Chùm Nho Cinema with the 8th edition titled “from Home to Home”, continuing to be held at the familiar venue, Nhà cafe at 26 Phan Huy Ích Street.
The three short films that Ostin brings to CNC#8 this time include “The Journey,” “Bình,” and “The Last Defenders of Vietnam”, respectively produced in 2012, 2020, and 2023. This series of films is like a retrospective of his filmmaking journey, marking the first steps in his journey of simultaneously finding ways to live and telling his own stories.
“from Home to Home” is a title closely connected to the content of the three films, like a little stream flowing through Ostin’s works. Regardless of the subject matter or genre, this flow links a path of 11 years, and perhaps even longer. In addition, Ostin will also share with the audience his journey so far, his upcoming plans (for instance, working harder to buy a dishwasher), as well as the lessons he has learned both cherished and painful throughout his filmmaking process (or about the dishwasher that a director needs to have).
Film information:
1, The Journey (2012) – Documentary – 17’39
2, Bình (2020) – Fiction – 21’44
3, The Last Defenders of Vietnam (2023) – Documentary – 46’46
* The films have English subtitles.
About Director Ostin Fam
Growing up in the various corners of Hanoi, Ostin Fam moved house nine times. At the age of 18, he left his homeland to study film in the United States. Being color-blind and having a background as a specialized Physics student, he started making films in high school with his debut documentary “The Journey”, which tells the story of his single mother. He completed two other short films (“short/cut” and “Bình”), forming a trilogy of short films about the adult world through the perspective of adolescent characters. He practices both documentary and fiction filmmaking, sometimes blurring the boundaries of these two genres. It seems that, like many others, he often spends time standing between choices. Occasionally, he co-organizes film workshops (On The Reel Film Lab, Sonic Ground), teaches, and takes on various odd jobs to make a living.
