From Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design:
The “here/there” exhibition showcases the work in progress from the winners of the 2024 Design Talent Award, selected through a call for applications last year, supported by Vietnam Design Week. Under the guidance from a team of advisors based in Vietnam and Australia, Huu Khoa, Vo Ngoc Thanh Tien, Trang Do, and Sam (Dao Manh Khang) will share their journeys and the evolution of their creative visions, from designing communal spaces to creative storytelling, as well as new explorations in lighting design, sustainable handicraft, and communications.
“here/there” brings together creative ideas, where young artists breathe life into cultural heritage in their unique ways. From using transparent lacquer to connect materials with the artisan’s consciousness (Huu Khoa), to reviving traditional điệp paper (scallop shell-coated paper) on lampsahdes inspired by traditional bronze drums (Vo Ngoc Thanh Tien), to exploring the communal spaces in old apartments (Trang Do) and designing spaces to share stories with the community (Sam), each project showcases the relentless creativity of young artists in preserving and developing cultural heritage, while also creating positive values for the community.
The exhibition will also feature captured footage from the residency programmes in Melbourne (Australia) with contributions from Tom Trandt Minh Đạo (Tom Trandt) and Pham Hoang Linh, who will showcase updates on their current works during the upcoming exhibition and talk.
“here/there” is an initiative which builds upon the success of ‘Skilled Hands, Shared Culture’, a 2020 cross-cultural exhibition hosted by RMIT Gallery that featured the work of 10 Australian and 10 Vietnamese artists, designers, and craftspeople exploring the connections between artmaking and community. ‘dây đó (here/there)’ was officially launched as part of the Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design (VFCD) and is supported by a range of organizations, including the Australian Embassy in Vietnam, CAST (Contemporary Art and Social Transformation research group), RMIT University Vietnam, RMIT Gallery, Vietcraft, VICAS (Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Art Studies), Work Room Four, and Vietnam Design Week.
Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design 2024 is organised by RMIT University Vietnam in collaboration with Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies (VICAS). Hexagon and Viral Town serve as event partners, alongside a diverse array of individuals, groups, organisations, enterprises in the creative industries, with Behalf by Pencil as the creative partner and Hanoi Grapevine as the media partner.
