From the organizer:
Taking place from 2 PM to 6 PM on November 13, 2024, at the Red Scarf Cinema, the special film screening event titled ‘Once Upon a time: A cinematic narrative of Vietnamese children during wartime’ promises to bring emotional reminiscences of children’s images during wartime. This event is curated by Ngô Thanh, a curator and film instructor at Hanoi DOCLAB. The event, supported by the Vietnam Film Institute and filmmaker Đỗ Văn Hoàng, offers audiences a space for dialogue and reflection on the portrayal of childhood in Vietnam’s unique historical context.
Through three overarching themes—cinematic fiction, Vietnamese children, and wartime—‘Once Upon a time: A cinematic narrative of Vietnamese children during wartime’ raises profound questions about how cinema portrays children. By blending the poetics of narrative and harsh reality, the films enrich possibilities of being a child as well as an adult.
The event will screen two typical works of the 1970s: ‘Little Girl of Hanoi’ (dir. Hai Ninh, 1974) and ‘Mother is Away from Home’ (dir. Nguyen Khanh Du, 1979).
The Hanoi Festival of Creative Design 2024, with the theme “Creative Intersection,” will take place from November 9 to 17, 2024. It will include 100+ activities on the main route around August Revolution Square in Hoan Kiem district and participating locations in 30 districts and towns.
