From Artist-in-Residence Vietnam Network (AiRViNe):

Riccardo Matlakas is an artist selected from the collaboration between Hanoi Art Connecting International Exhibition and Workshop and the Artist-inResidence Vietnam Network (AiRViNe) from October 28 to November 4, 2024.

After more than 1 month in Vietnam, on November 24, 2024, the artist performed a performance piece “Orizzonti” (Horizon) with sculptures inspired by Quang Ganh and Non La. The performance was filmed at the long-standing traditional Thanh Ha market combined with works made by Hanoi Art Connecting, that will be introduced in this Open Studio.

The program is organized by AiRViNe and received support from Complex 01.

About artist:

Riccardo Matlakas is best known for his multi-talented capacity in different art forms including performance art, painting, and street art, sculpture, and installation.

Matlakas obtained a degree in Sculpture at the University of Fine Arts in Naples and art studies at Goldsmiths University of London and University of the Arts London (UAL) and obtained an MA in Social Sculpture at Oxford Brookes University.

Riccardo values the context he works in as the main inspiration for his work, finding common ground with each culture he connects with. The artist creates cathartic actions and performances at the forefront of current political, environmental, and spiritual concerns by digging for the essence of humanity beyond race and custom. The multidisciplinary artist works also actively with painting, street art, and ceramic mosaics going further into installation art.

Artist-in-Residence Vietnam Network (AiRViNe) is established with the aim of contributing to Vietnam’s emerging art scene by fostering cultural exchange, enhancing skills, increasing exposure, providing networking opportunities, preserving cultural heritage, aiding professional development, supporting art infrastructure through artists-in- residence programs, and engaging the community.

Since September 2024, AiRViNe has been the official member of the international network On-The-Move.
