Gate Gate Gallery is pleased to present the duo exhibition ‘Như màn đêm kia cũng thấy – As if the night could see us’, featuring works by artists Zunng Zunng and Vũ Diệu Hương.
As the night falls, unfolding a stage where the role-swaps begin. Stepping into this space, we are both the audience and performers, continually passing through different acts in the stories of days gone by. A game of child pretend, a glance back at childhood from another distance.
Darkness lures our vision deep into the familiar, only to unearth its hidden strangeness. Like a startled awakening in the dark: what lies before us suddenly looks back with a gaze of estrangement.
Moving through these regions of light and shadow, the two artists meet where things are all but soundly asleep: the past that relentlessly finds its way back, fidgeting within the bodies of objects; the present carrying moments of impasse, tacitly acknowledged through drifting strokes of color. In the night of the mind, when our eyes are no longer tricked by the illusion of orderly dailiness, what is concealed quietly emerges, waiting for the moment we turn to meet their fleeting glimpses.
About the artists
Vu Dieu Huong (b. Nam Dinh, Vietnam) is an artist whose work explores the intersection of fragility and violence lurking under the aesthetics of cuteness, childhood, and femininity. Holding an MFA in Computational Arts from Goldsmiths, University of London (2024) and a BA in Digital Media from RMIT University, Vietnam (2019), she uses technology and performative fiction as methods to investigate repressed memories and propose speculative narratives through sculptural bodies and performances that interweave the virtual and physical. These fusions create dynamic interplays that challenge viewers to confront life’s uncanny undercurrents.
Recipient of the Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design Grant (2024) and the RMIT Art & Design Grant (2023)—along with projects like a Motion Capture Live Performance scheduled in November 2024—her notable exhibitions include “Into The Well” at the Vietnamese Festival of Creativity & Design, Hanoi, Vietnam (2024); “That’s cute” at A+ Works of Art, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (2024); “Listen closely to the story I’m about to tell you” at Feelium Gallery, London, UK (2024); Goldsmiths Computational Arts Degree Show at Goldsmiths, University of London (2024); “Game ≈ Role-playing ≈ Rule-setting” at Small Time Project, London, UK (2024); “Invisible Hands” at Central Saint Martins, supported by the British Digital Art Network (2023); “Simbiosys – Computational Arts Degree Show” at Goldsmiths, University of London (2023); “Aniconolasm” at Goldsmiths, University of London (2023); and the “MUNG” Pop-up Show at Goldsmiths, University of London (2022).
Nguyễn Hoàng Dung (Zunng Zunng, b. 1995, Hanoi) is a graduate of Painting from the Vietnam University of Fine Arts. Working across various mediums, primarily tempera and oil, her practice deeply explores family dynamics, human relationships, psychology, and the formative impact of childhood education.
Through her distinct style, Zunng blurs the boundaries between adults and children to evoke the fragmented memories of anyone who has ever grown up. Choosing an instinctive, unsketched approach to tempera alongside modest tools like oil pastels, she frees her mind to converse directly with the subconscious. For Zunng, art and life flow as one; creation is an ongoing dialogue established across three realms: between the artist and life, the artist and the artwork, and ultimately, the artwork and the viewer.
