A dream exists in a liminal space – between what is seen and what is felt, between the present and what has been preserved in memory. In art, the dream does not necessarily signify an escape from reality into a fictional world. Rather, it may be understood as a mode through which reality is perceived, transformed, and returned to us in another form.
From this perspective, “Echoes of a dream” Group exhibition brings together three artists, Lê Mai, Lâm Tú Trân, and Lâm Gia Huấn. Though each begins from a distinct field of observation, they converge in their shared interest in the ways the world is seen, retained, and transformed through inner life. Nature, memory, the human figure, and the shifting states of the inner world intertwine across their practices, evoking a distinctly East Asian sensibility in which the visible always carries resonances that extend beyond itself.
For Lê Mai, nature is approached through the practice of direct observation and plein-air study, a process in which the landscape is registered through the changing conditions of light, time, and perception. For Lâm Tú Trân, the image becomes a form of narrative, through which experiences, memories, and inner movements are transformed into a language of suggestion and openness. In the work of Lâm Gia Huấn, the female figure becomes a site where beauty, personal memory, and cultural echoes rooted in the Mekong region converge.
Together, these three practices offer distinct ways of approaching the world: through observation, narrative, accumulation, and recollection. Between them, the “dream” becomes a way for reality to continue existing after passing through the gaze, memory, and inner life of the human subject.
And perhaps, like a dream, art does not necessarily need to be explained to its very end. It need only open a moment of recognition – the realization that what we are looking at may have existed somewhere before: in memory, in imagination, or in some deeper and more hidden part of ourselves.
A place that is not entirely unfamiliar.
