Tadioto

A message by artist Thai Bui in reaction to the stressful life in America. Tightly wound and sealed with lacquer, the inner tubes Thai turns into sculptural pieces represent the impossibility of further inflation, or the inability to withstand further pressure.

Thai Bui will be at Tadioto this Friday as we present his latest works on that theme coupled with pen-and-ink drawings relating to stone and pressure.

Tadioto will be showing a short film about the artist and his art. Light food and beverages will be provided.

thaibui-headshotThai Bui grew up in Ha Noi during the American war and emigrated to the United States when he was 21.  He received his B.F.A from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1988 and his M.F.A from Stanford University in 1992.
He has been the recipient of a number of scholarships and prizes and his work has been shown in museums and galleries in California and New York. His work often depicts the displacement and longing he has experienced in both the U.S. and Viet Nam.
“My art is about intuition and unpredictability,” Thai says. Working with natural and found objects (stone, wood, metal, rubber, etc.) Thai experiments with the forces in nature.  “Negative and positive, yin and yang, and black and white, separate and united.” He is currently in Vietnam exploring with local materials for his future work.
