“A Page of Madness” is a concert – silent film presented during the week of Sound. It offers an original approach to the relationship between images and sounds. From the early days of silent film existed the need for sound design. It is often seen that the musicians play live, accompanying the projected work. The score was usually left to the interpretation of the musicians engaged for projection.
For this creation, Sylvain Streiff, French guitarist Nguyen Thuy Dung, plucked zither player Nguyen Thuy Dung and pianist Phan Phuc will accompany the live screening of the film “A Page of Madness”.
Improvisers share a deep interest in traditional Vietnamese music, experimental music and the preparation of instruments.
“A Page of Madness” (1926) is a black and white silent film from Japanese director Teinosuke Kinugasa. A masterpiece of world silent cinema, the film is set in an asylum. Mounted in a maddening maelstrom, the film tells the story of asylum superintendent, whose wife is one of the patients. One day their daughter arrives at the asylum to announce her engagement to her mother. The meeting starts intrigues and flashbacks series that reveal the history of the family.
